CAIRO, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) -- An Egyptian court sentenced on Sunday Mubarak-era politician Safwat al-Sherif to three years in prison and a fine of 99 million Egyptian pounds (5.5 million U.S. dollars) in a retrial over charges of illicit gains.

The court, however, acquitted Sherif's son in the same retrial, overturning the decision of the Court of Cassation in May 2016, which handed a five-year jail sentence and a 209-million-pound fine against al-Sherif and his son over charges of corruption during the administration of former President Hosni Mubarak.

The retrial was ordered in December 2016.

The Mubarak-era strongman can still appeal the sentence of the Cairo Criminal Court, state-run Ahram Online news website reported.

Sherif held various public posts in the Mubarak administration, including as the head of Egypt's State Information Body and the Egyptian Radio and Television Union, the information minister, and the speaker of Egypt's upper house in parliament, which was abolished in 2014.

In 2012, a court acquitted Sherif and other high-level Mubarak figures of organizing the "Battle of the Camel," a deadly mob attack against anti-regime protesters during the 18-day uprising in 2011 which eventually toppled Mubarak.
