NAIROBI, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) -- Kenya will be represented by four female boxers at this year's Commonwealth Games scheduled for April in Gold Coast, Australia, the Boxing Association of Kenya (BAK) has announced.

John Kameta, the President of BAK said the quartet were selected alongside 10 male boxers at the trials and have proven their worth to be in the squad.

"The ladies have worked very hard and the experience they gained during our trip to India will help them in correcting their mistakes. They are inspiration to other girls in the country who want to take up the sport," Kameta said on Sunday.

The group of four comprise of Christine Ongare (light flyweight), Veronica Mbithe (flyweight), Lorna Kusa (welterweight), and Elizabeth Andiego (middleweight).

The quartet represented the country at the inaugural India Open Boxing Tournament in Delhi in February as part of the country's preparations for the April games and will also participated at the Cuba Boxing Championships in Havana on Feb. 28.

The Indian event dubbed "Spicejet" held in Delhi, featured 223 boxers from 22 who were in contention for the 100,000 U.S. dollar-prize money.

Despite the Kenyan women not returning home with a medal from the Indian outing, Patrick Maina, Kenya's head coach said that they are working on correcting the mistakes they noticed during the event ahead of the trip to Gold Coast.

Kenyan men are Shaffi Bakari (light flyweight), Mohamed Ali (flyweight), Benson Gicharu (bantamweight), Nick Okoth (lightweight); the latter two are Kenya's medal prospects.

Others are Jacob Kimathi (welterweight), Edwin Okongo (middleweight), Nick Abaka (light heavyweight), Elly Ajowi (heavyweight) and Fredrick Ramogi (super heavyweight).
