JUBA, June 3 (Xinhua) -- At least 14 people were killed and 23 others injured following a Tuesday night attack on a cattle camp in northern Rubkona County, South Sudan's Unity State, officials confirmed on Wednesday.

Unity State Minister of Information and Communication Nyakenya Johannes Keah said armed youth from the neighboring Ruweng Administrative Area carried out the raid at about 10:00 p.m. local time (2000 GMT) in Payangai Village, Budang Payam.

The attack left 14 people dead, including children, with 23 others currently receiving treatment at Unity oil field facilities, Johannes said in a statement.

She said that the attackers stole over 200 cattle, causing severe hardship for local families.

"We call upon the government of Ruweng Administrative Area to immediately investigate this criminal act and ensure that all perpetrators, organizers and accomplices are identified, arrested, and held accountable in accordance with the law," Johannes said.

On March 1, armed youth from Unity State's Mayom County launched an attack in the Ruweng Administrative Area, killing over 170 people, including local government officials.

The border between Unity State and Ruweng is a frequent flashpoint for retaliatory violence and cattle raiding. ■
